Bobby Jones never played the finished course at Peachtree. The first nine holes were ready in October 1947, and according to Top 100 Golf Courses he would never play the completed course. But the club was his idea as much as anyone's, and it still carries his preferences: a great golf course, and very little else.
It is also one of the most private clubs in Atlanta in a literal sense. It publishes nothing about how to join, what it costs or who belongs. What can be known comes from its history, its rankings and its public tax filings, which is what this guide sets out, along with the neighborhood around it.
How Peachtree Came to Be
The idea, LINKS Magazine reports, began with Dick Garlington, a member of the USGA Green Section and a close friend of Jones, with Jones and Coca-Cola's Robert W. Woodruff among its early backers. They found a 240-acre tract in north Atlanta that had most recently been the Ashford Park Nurseries. Jones supplied the vision and Robert Trent Jones designed the course, and when the club opened officially in 1948 it took the name Peachtree Golf Club.
Jones also decided what it would not have. He meant, as Stroll Magazine puts it, to leave out the tennis courts, swimming pool and other amenities of many Atlanta clubs. That is still true.
The course has been on Golf Digest's list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses since 1966 and sits at 22nd for 2025-26, second in Georgia. GOLF Magazine ranks it 75th in the world and describes a par-72 layout of 7,414 yards whose 10th hole has an enormous punchbowl green. It hosted the 1989 Walker Cup, which Great Britain and Ireland won 12.5 to 11.5, their first Walker Cup win in the United States.
What Is Known About Membership
Very little, and that is the honest answer. The club does not publish a process, a schedule of fees or a list of categories. LINKS put the membership at about 225 in an undated profile and quoted the head professional comparing it to a fraternity of longtime friends. Several websites describe it as invitation-only, with no application and a member required to put a name forward, but no credible outlet has confirmed how it works.
The cost figures online are weaker still. The common claim, an initiation of $100,000 to $200,000 and dues of $12,000 to $24,000 a year, comes from sites that describe their own basis as research and rumor. One of them lists a social membership with pool access, at a club that has never had a pool, which tells you how those pages are produced.
The only hard numbers are in the club's IRS filing as a nonprofit social club: about $8 million in total revenue for the year ending March 2026. For a club of a few hundred members with one course and no other facilities, that is useful context. It is not a fee. For how initiation, dues and assessments fit together at clubs that do share them, see our guide to how club costs work.
The Homes Around the Club
Peachtree sits in Brookhaven, northeast of Buckhead, and its closest residential neighbor is Ashford Park, which shares its name with the nursery the club replaced. Oglethorpe University is just under a mile away, and Historic Brookhaven, built around the Capital City Club's course, is about two miles south. Lenox Square is a short drive.
Our Brookhaven guide puts typical luxury pricing at $1.5 million to $5 million and up. Prices vary a great deal from street to street in this part of Brookhaven, so the specific block matters more than the neighborhood name. For a Buckhead address, Peachtree Heights is the usual starting point.
If Peachtree Is Part of the Reason
- Know that there is no public path in. If you do not already know members, the club is unlikely to be a near-term plan.
- Decide whether you want a golf club or a full-service club. Peachtree is the former by design, and the Capital City Club two miles away is the latter.
- Buy the house for the neighborhood. Brookhaven works well on its own, which matters if membership takes years or never comes.
For the other clubs in the city, see our Atlanta country club communities guide.
The Short Version
- Golf only. No pool, no tennis, by Bobby Jones's design.
- 22nd in America on Golf Digest's 2025-26 list, second in Georgia.
- Nothing about membership is published, including how to join. Treat online figures as rumor.
- It is in Brookhaven, beside Ashford Park, not in Buckhead.

No credible source has published a figure.
Who founded Peachtree Golf Club?
